Privacy Policy
Skyturns is made by Joakim Tall, a sole developer in Sweden. This page says what the game and this site collect, why, and for how long. It covers the Steam version, the iOS version, the Android version on Google Play and the same build downloaded from skyturns.com, and skyturns.com.
The short version: no ads, no tracking, no analytics, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
Your account
The game signs you in through the platform you play on, so that your times and levels stay yours. Each account gets a random identifier of its own.
- Steam. The game signs in with your Steam account. We store your Steam id and your Steam name.
- iOS. When you are signed in to Game Center, the game signs in with it. We store the player id Game Center gives this developer's games and your Game Center nickname. Signed out of Game Center, you play without an account.
- Android. The game asks Google Play's licensing service on your phone to confirm that you bought the game. We store the user id in Google Play's answer, so that we recognise you the next time, and if you have a Google Play Games name we store it as your name.
- A phone linked to Steam. A phone, for example an Android phone without Google Play, can play as your Steam account: the phone shows a code, and you type it into the game on your PC. The phone makes a random secret and keeps it with its save; we store only a fingerprint of that secret (a hash) with your Steam account, for at most three phones, and the oldest is dropped when a fourth is linked. The code itself is kept for at most an hour. A linked phone plays as your Steam account and under its name; an account the phone had before is kept as it was, but no longer used.
Where the platform gives us no name, the game makes one up for you, like "Quiet Heron". The game's Settings show the name under "Playing as".
With your account we store your best time on each level with its replay, which the game uploads by itself when you set one; the levels you publish and the replays you share; and your times in battles, the time you played in them and what you won there. Your name is shown to other players next to your times, replays, levels and battle results. All of this is kept until your account is deleted.
What the game sends
- Battle talk. Text you type into a battle is shown to the other players on that level, with your name. It is kept until the battle ends, which is at most 7 days, and is gone minutes after.
- Crash reports. When the game hits an error, it saves a report and sends it by itself: an error the game recovers from goes in the same session, a crash the next time the game starts. A report holds the error text and trace, the state of the game around the error, the game version, your operating system version, the time, and a random install id the game made up for itself. The id says that two reports came from the same save and nothing else; it is not your device's id, and a report is not tied to your account. The id is kept with your save, so it goes when you delete the game unless a backup brings the save back: Steam Cloud on Steam, a device backup on iOS, and Android's own backup when you set up a new phone. Reports are deleted after 90 days.
- Playing near others. While you run a level, the game sends your runner's position to our server so that other players on the same level see you as a ghost. It goes out unencrypted, under a random id that lasts until you close the game and carries no name or account, and it is not stored: the server forgets it seconds after you stop. When you are signed in and the level has a battle running, the time you play there is credited to your account.
- Your IP address. Every request reaches our server from an IP address. We count requests per address to stop abuse, and those counters are gone within 24 hours. While you play near others, the server holds your address to send you their ghosts and forgets it seconds after you stop. We store it nowhere else. When a request fails at our web server, the server's own error log can note the address; that log is only read to fix faults.
What we do not do
The game has no advertising, no in-app purchases and no third-party analytics or tracking code, and it does not read your contacts, photos, location or advertising identifier.
Who else is involved
- Steam, run by Valve, distributes the Steam version and handles its sign-in and purchases.
- Apple distributes the iOS version and handles its purchases, and its Game Center signs you in.
- Google distributes the Android version through Google Play and handles its purchases, and Google Play's licence check signs you in. The Android version on skyturns.com is the same build, signed by Google Play.
- Our servers are rented from Hetzner and stand in Finland.
- The pages on skyturns.com, this one included, load their typeface from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google when you open one. The game itself does not.
Children
The game is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted, by writing to the address below. Include the name the game shows under "Playing as" in its Settings, and for a Steam account your Steam name or id.
Changes
When this policy changes, the new version is posted on this page.
